Welcome to East Towson
A small, walkable pocket of front porches and old trees, tucked a few blocks off York Road and one of the most historic corners of Baltimore County. Here is what it is actually like to live here.
The short version
Why people who want Towson without the townhouse sameness keep landing here.
East Towson is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the county, and it looks the part. You get late-1800s and early-1900s homes on modest lots, a lot of them Victorians and foursquares with real porches, set on the old residential streets like Fairmount, Jefferson, and Chapman. It is not a subdivision. Nothing matches, and that is the appeal.
What makes it work in 2026 is location. You are a few blocks from the heart of downtown Towson, so the courthouse, the university, Towson Town Center, and the restaurant row on York Road are all a short drive or a walkable distance. For the money, you get an older detached home with character in a spot most Towson buyers assume they cannot afford a single-family house.
The honest tradeoff: these are older homes on smaller lots, and street parking varies block to block. If you want new construction and a two-car attached garage, this is not that. If you want character, walkability, and history, it is hard to beat.
A neighborhood with real history
Historic East Towson is recognized as the oldest African-American community in Baltimore County. Its roots trace to 1829, when the terms of Governor Charles Carnan Ridgely's will freed more than 350 people who had been enslaved at the Hampton estate, and many of them settled and built here. Community groups today run a walking tour that maps the original homes and churches, so the history is not just a plaque, it is something you can walk.
Schools
Served by Baltimore County Public Schools.
East Towson sits inside the Baltimore County Public Schools system, and the broader Towson area feeds toward Towson High School, a longtime comprehensive high school with an established Law and Public Policy magnet program. Nearby elementary and middle options in the Towson zone include schools such as Pleasant Plains Elementary and Dumbarton Middle.
School assignments in Baltimore County are set by exact address and do change. Before you buy, confirm the current attendance zone for a specific home directly with Baltimore County Public Schools using their school locator.
Parks & the outdoors
Radebaugh Park, over in the neighboring Aigburth Manor area with its entrance off Maryland Avenue, is a newer county park that gives the east side of Towson a real neighborhood green. It grew out of the old Radebaugh flower-growing property, so there is a nice local backstory to it too. Beyond that you are a short hop from the trails and open space at Cromwell Valley Park to the northeast and the fields and paths around Towson University to the west.
Getting around & the commute
• Roughly five minutes to the heart of downtown Towson, the courthouse, and Towson University.
• Easy access to the Baltimore Beltway (I-695), so Timonium, Parkville, and the rest of the county are quick.
• York Road is right there for the direct shot south toward Baltimore City and north toward Timonium.
• Towson Town Center and the York Road retail corridor are minutes away for everyday errands.
Shopping, food & everyday life
Downtown Towson does the heavy lifting: Towson Town Center for the mall trip, Trader Joe's and the grocery options along the York Road corridor, and the mix of long-running spots and newer restaurants around Allegheny Avenue and the circle. Towson Row and the university keep the area busy and give it a coffee-shop-and-brewery energy without you having to live in the thick of it. When you want quiet, you are back on your porch three blocks away.
